Brahms: A German Requiem

St Andrew’s, Corbridge
Saturday 27th April 2024 at 3:00pm

Ryton Choral Society will be performing Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), in German, in the wonderful acoustic of St Andrew’s Church, Corbridge under the direction of Alastair Lord and accompanied by two pianists, David Murray and Eileen Bown.

Johannes Brahms began composing this work in 1865 following the death of his mother, which deeply affected him. Although first performed in 1868, Brahms later added two additional movements to complete the seven we know today. The text is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language.
